A Part of Ourselves

Giving whether donating money or volunteering time can be difficult. It requires giving up a part of ourselves to another.

One way to ease the pressure of giving is to focus on what we have. Focusing on the gifts and blessings in our lives allows for the flow to others.

That's why when separating a tithe from newborn animals we're told to first count 1,2,3,...8,9. the ones we'll keep for ourselves, to focus on and appreciate the bounty that we have and will enjoy.

Then and only then we'll be able to give the tenth to Hashem with full appreciation.

"Any tithe of animals ...., the tenth shall be holy to Hashem." Leviticus 27:32
